SICILIAN CERAMICS MAREMORO

It all began one day when, sitting on a sofa and discussing their projects for the future, Anna confessed to Manuela that she had a secret dream, and that her dream had the aromas of Sicily.

Anna, founder of well-known blog tasteofrunway.com, loves creating, cooking and writing.
Manuela, an expert in communications and advertising, loves eating everything Anna cooks and transforming ideas into grand projects.

They live between Milan, Rome and Sicily, and it was from their meeting and the combination of their experiences and their shared love for this island and for Sicilian ceramics that Maremoro was born.

WE PRODUCE UNIQUE PIECES WHICH HAVE THAT EVOKE
ART, SEA, LAND AND FIRE.

THE CREATION OF OUR
SICILIAN CERAMICS

The realization of our handcrafted products follows ancient traditions and is a complex process which takes many days.

FIRST STEP

Everything begins when the raw material – the clay – is placed inside the gypsum moulds which allow the first step of the process to take place.

Once the mould is opened, the object is thoroughly cleaned and hand-finished, with special attention paid to the details.

The clay used for Sicilian pottery is extremely porous and soft, and is skilfully moulded by hand.

It is at this point that, following strict rules, the craftsmen create the decorations which are then applied: frills, crowns, curls, prickly pears, citrus fruit, leaves, flowers, necklaces and chillies are shaped and applied by hand until the desired result is achieved.

When the piece is dry and we are satisfied with how it looks, it is given its first firing.

THE FIRING

To become ceramics, the vase must undergo two firings in a kiln. The first is used to transform it into terracotta, and the second to turn it into ceramic.

Once the first firing, which lasts thirty-six hours at a temperature of about 980°C, is completed, the piece is slowly cooled. At this stage, it is called “biscuit”.

To be transformed into ceramics it is then immersed in tanks containing the enamel which will give the object its distinctive, eternally shiny appearance.

After the enamel has dried naturally and without any changes in temperature, it is hand-painted with brushes and then given a second firing of about thirty-six hours in a kiln at a temperature of 920°C.

GOLD DECORATIONS

In the case of decorations in gold, the pieces are then subjected to a further firing to fix the colour.

This phase lasts about twenty-four hours at a temperature of 700°C.

The long and complex procedure of making Maremoro Sicilian ceramics results in a unique product which symbolises the wonderful Mediterranean art and culture of this incredible island.

And that is why you will feel all the love we have for this extraordinary land, its landscapes and its people in the design of our products.

THE TASTE OF MAREMORO

With its Mediterranean character and modern, sometimes minimalist look, Maremoro doesn’t speak only about dreams of love – it aims to bring Sicilian culture to the whole world.

You can see the cultural wealth which we express in our Sicilian ceramics by browsing the pages of the site or following Maremoro on social networks, where, through its flavours and traditions, we will tell you about Sicily.

From the flavour of its Marsala to the unmistakable scent of fish in its couscous, from cinnamon, saffron, garlic and parsley to marzipan, nougat, pistachios and panelle, without forgetting the cassata, candied fruits, cannoli, fresh tomatoes, basil, almonds, the granita, pane cunzato, pine nuts and raisins.

And then, the sound of the tambourine, the crystal-clear water, the dunes smoothed by the wind, the scorching air perfumed with citrus fruits, the islands and the volcanoes that illuminate the night sky with their pyrotechnic imaginings.

We don’t know if you will buy one of our pieces of pottery, but we’re sure that you will fall in love with Sicily.
